Dragonfly distraction

This looks like some of the photos I’ve seen of the female Eastern Amberwing (Perithemis tenera), but unlike some of the others, so I don’t really know what it is. I was supposed to be taking photos of people riding horses, but only 6 feet away was this beautiful dragonfly, swaying precariously in the wind atop a thoroughly eaten milkweed plant.

Taking a break from hunting mosquitoes for us, it stayed in the area for about 10 minutes.

And I did take some horse photos, too.

There was some entertaining bareback pony riding that reminded me of the Thelwell cartoons, in that the pony didn’t want to do anything and the riders wore their legs out between trying to make her go, and trying to stay on.
